Times are changing. The image of the rugged man that takes little care about his looks is dwindling rapidly. Social experts say that the extremes are what change society, not because people try to emulate them, but because they shift what we think is “normal”. That is why many people laugh at the “metrosexual” movement, and most men will claim never to go that far in caring for their looks, but the truth is people, especially men, are now caring more and more about their appearance.
Looking sharp is not something exclusive to our times. People have always been asked to look good, especially in the working world. If you look at men’s fashion in the 50’s, for example, the suit and tie and hat combo implied a deep sense of style, along with the “clean shaven” look.
But nowadays looking good involves more than just looking good in the workplace. People are expected to be keen in taking care of their looks while relaxing, while having fun, even while home alone. Fashion items like watches, hats, even mens designer shirts are becoming more important than, say, the model car you drive or the size of the house you live in.
